First Love

by Thomas Vaughan

When we met, I wanted to hug her. It was her eyes. She looked at me, and I sank in a sea of iridescent blue, so deep that I felt my heart must burst with wonder. Her eyes were sapphires, laced with feminine warmth, humour, and understanding. Eyes that told me that she belonged in my world, and that I held a special place in hers.

Without a word, I knew that this was the girl that I would love for the rest of my life, the lady that I would die for. I was ready fight dragons to protect her.

She smiled, a warm and gentle smile, as though she could read my thoughts. Was anyone ever so beautiful? That dimple captured the side of her mouth to perfection. My heart soared with joy.

Only a few minutes ago, I had been a boring male, in a bland world. Then I walked through a door and there she was. I was immediately, undeniably lost. My heart was hers. The earth was a jewel that I could hold in my hand. From this day forward, anyone who hurt her would answer to me.

With the greatest care not to cause alarm or distress, I reached out to touch her. She grasped my hand. A miracle had happened. All the love I felt for her was returned in full measure.

Gently, I took her up in my arms.

“ Hello darling daughter,” I said, “Welcome to my world.”
