Lily And Buzz

by lois thurman

The big brown bunny was hopping through the forest, he could here crying, he peeked around a tree, he saw a little girl, sitting among the blue flowers, growing wild in the forest. She was a tiny little thing, wearing a pink dress, with pink flowers in her hair, she was maybe, eight or nine.

She was weeping like her heart was broken, bunny felt sad, for her. He hopped over to where she sat, what's wrong, he asked? she looked up at him with her large green eyes, leave me alone, she said. What is making you weep like this, bunny asked? I don't have to tell you, she said. Bunny replied, no you don't, you don't have to tell me a thing. Well, go away and leave me alone, she said.

Would you consider having a tea party with me, bunny asked? You are silly, she replied, where would you get the tea? I have lots of tea at my home, said bunny. Well, I guess I could have tea with you, she replied. My name is Lily said the little girl, you cannot have tea with someone, unless you tell them your name. My name is Buzz, said the bunny.

Lily stood up, wiping away her tears, she walked with buzz beside her. they came upon the most beautiful tree house, pink and purple flowers growing everywhere, it had a little garden, lots of carrots, of course. Welcome to my home, said Buzz. I have never seen anything so pretty, said Lily.

Lily sat at the tiny table, while Buzz was getting things ready. He brought tea and cookies to the table on a tray, he poured tea for Lily and hopped up to his seat. Buzz and Lily sat in silence for a moment. Lily spoke softly, with a tremble in her voice, I am dying, buzz, I have cancer, Buzz did not say a word, a tear rolled down his cheek.

Will you be my friend, asked Lily? Of course I will, said Buzz. We can have tea parties and share secrets, but Lily, you never have to tell me anything , if you choose not to. Lily was smiling for the first time in a while, she knew, Buzz was going to be the very best in the whole world.

Buzz gave Lily a big smile and a wink. Lily, said Buzz, "friends help each other heal". I know that now, said Lily.
