Shadow Poetry was founded by James and Marie Summers on February 26, 2000 as an organization devoted to poetry writing, education, and offering quality services to writers around the globe. The Shadow Poetry web site was built in March 2000 around an email-based poetry group once offered through Yahoo Groups, but the needs of its members could not be contained by an email list alone. In time, Shadow Poetry developed into a writers resource and publishing house. With the overwhelming growth of the site, the email group was closed at the end of 2004 to focus more upon education, publication, and contest hosting. At then end of 2012, Shadow Poetry downsized from a small press to focus only on poetry writing, education, and other resources.

Shadow Poetry was created as a place for writers to walk \'out of the shadows\' with their poetry. Our goal is to help poets improve writing skills, increase knowledge of poetry forms, build self-confidence, and receive recognition for their works in a friendly and supportive environment. In order to reach our goal, we have set up comprehensive writer\'s resource web site for poets all over the world.

Our vision is to be the best ad-free poetry resource site on the web; however, to keep our site free of annoying advertising, Shadow Poetry does need your donations to keep the site clean and open to poets, students, everyone!
